The greatest predictor of long-term health isn’t genetics — it’s how the body responds to and recovers from stress over time.
Allostatic load refers to the cumulative wear and tear placed on the nervous system, immune system, and metabolism by chronic stress. When left unaddressed, it accelerates aging, depletes vitality, and quietly shapes both physical and psychological health. The encouraging news is that many of these effects are not permanent — they are adaptable.
In this university-level seminar, we will explore the neuroscience and physiology of allostatic load, with particular attention to how stress becomes embodied — and how regulation, rhythm, and recovery can restore resilience. Drawing on research from neuroscience, health psychology, and contemplative science, this lecture offers both conceptual clarity and practical insight into supporting long-term well-being.
This seminar is offered as a free, live online lecture in the spirit of public scholarship and accessible education
